In a world where social media is not just a part of people’s lives, it’s become the center around which their lives revolve- it’s no surprise that children are hooked on to their devices. A recent newspaper article titled “Over 60% Urban Kids in India Spend 3 Hours Daily on Entertainment Apps” sheds light on a concerning trend that is sweeping across urban India.

As technology advances and screens become more captivating, especially in this post covid era – parents, caregivers and educators are grappling with the implications of this growing digital addiction among our youth.

With the allure of view on demand OTT streaming and the endless scrolling potential of social media platforms, an alarming 75% of children worldwide, are spending less time outdoors as compared to prison inmates, making the term ‘cell phone’ sound rather appropriate!

This excessive usage is contributing to addiction-like behaviors, with children craving the dopamine rush that comes from likes, comments, and in-app rewards. This not only interferes with their ability to concentrate on tasks, but is leading to feelings of anxiety and depression when they do not receive the validation they seek.

Furthermore, excessive screen time can erode the quality of relationships within families. Many parents are struggling to connect with their children as screens increasingly occupy their attention. Family time that was once spent bonding over meals, games, or conversations is often replaced by individuals scrolling through social media feeds. This disconnect can have far-reaching consequences for family dynamics and emotional development.

Education is another area adversely affected by this digital addiction. While there are educational apps available, the excessive use of entertainment apps often distracts children from their studies. This can result in declining academic performance and limit their future prospects.

Addressing the issue of digital addiction among urban children in India requires a multi-pronged approach. Parents play a pivotal role in setting boundaries and modeling responsible device usage. Parenting needs to extend into the virtual world too and parents must explore ways to unplug their child by following these five simple steps

1. Set Clear Screen Time Limits:

Establish clear and reasonable screen time limits for your teens. Discuss these limits with them and involve them in the decision-making process. Be consistent in enforcing these rules to create a healthy routine.

2. Encourage Balance:

Encourage a balanced schedule by emphasizing the importance of other activities like physical exercise, reading, hobbies, and social interactions. Help your teens find alternatives to screen time that they enjoy and can engage in regularly.

3. Lead by Example:

Be a role model for your teens by managing your own screen time and demonstrating responsible digital habits. When they see you prioritizing offline activities, they are more likely to do the same.

4. Create Screen Free Zones and Times:

Designate certain areas of the home as ‘No Screen Zones’, such as the dinner table and bedrooms. Establish screen-free times, such as before bedtime, to promote healthier sleep patterns.

5. Foster Open Communication:

Maintain an open and non-judgmental line of communication with your teens. Encourage them to share their online experiences, concerns, and interests. Address any online safety issues or cyberbullying incidents promptly and supportively.

Schools also need to educate and sensitize students about the potential dangers of excessive screen time and incorporate digital literacy programs into the curriculum.

Additionally, app developers and technology companies design apps with features that encourage responsible usage, such as screen-time limits and notifications that remind users to take breaks. Furthermore, media literacy programs can help children understand the persuasive tactics used in app design, empowering them to make informed decisions about their digital consumption.

Let’s take this as a wakeup call and start working together to promote responsible device usage to ensure a brighter and healthier future for the next generation.
